(Joni Mitchell or Counting Crows)
I’ve resisted posting too much political stuff up here. I reported back in May 2011 about standing for the local (then) Borough Council (here) and again in May 2015 when I stood for re-election to the City Council (here).
And I thought that that would be it for now; I’m pleased to be able to serve the residents of my Town on the Town and City Council’s. We’ve started holding ‘street surgeries’ and I like to think that I’m doing a reasonable job of keeping on top of residents’ issues and – perhaps more importantly – keeping residents informed through both traditional and ‘social’ media. South Woodham Ferrers has a very active Facebook page to which over 13,000 people subscribe and contribute.
That was until the Tuesday of last week, when I had a call from the leader of Chelmsford City Council. The Council’s cabinet member for Leisure Services had stood down for personal reasons; it had been decided to split the cabinet role (into ‘Parks’, and ‘Leisure’), and would I accept the responsibility for Parks?
Of course I accepted. I’d been working with local sports teams to improve sports facilities and the new role would include responsibility for sports grounds.
The two new roles were announced at a Conservative group meeting the following evening and made public on Thursday October 1st. The local newspaper described me as a ‘stalwart‘, I’m not too sure about that, but I’m sure that I’ll be called worse in due course.
So, a new challenge, and a budget of around £3.5m, bring it on!
