We’d been invited to lunch by our Karen and Bill (our daughter and her husband).

They live in Mayford – between Guildford and Woking – and while they tell us that they have a number of good pubs, ‘gastro’ pubs, and restaurants in the vicinity, ‘The Olive Tree’ is a favourite of theirs, only a few minutes drive, and we’ve been taken there before.

It was a fine sunny day, the car park was pretty crowded, but on entering the pub – past the eponymous Olive tree – it was surprisingly quiet, presumably people were enjoying the sizeable garden.

The Olive Tree has recently undergone a change of ownership, this has prompted a slight change of décor. Only slight, it wasn’t unpleasant before, but the décor is firmly in gastro pub territory, stone, and mismatched furniture; tastefully done, no ‘pub chain’ décor here.

We were shown to our table, and handed our menus. There are maybe ten starters, priced between £7 and £9, a further dozen or so ‘pub meals’ between £12 and £20 and then a dozen or so “a la carte” dishes that are slightly pricier. There were also about four dishes on the blackboard.

Drinks-wise there’s a comprehensive (but not overly so) wine list, a gin list (very trendy)and a small but well thought out selection of draught beers – Doombar, Korel Cornish Lager, Amstel (IIRC) and a favourite of mine – Timothy Taylor’s ‘Landlord’.

For starters our Bill ordered and enjoyed the squid with sweet chilli sauce while the rest of us enjoyed the potted crab and shrimp. Delicious.

For mains, Val ordered Scampi (off the blackboard), our Bill the Rump Steak while our Karen and I both ordered the cheese burger; all were accompanied by skin-on chips and we all cleared our plates.

I’m guessing that the burgers were home made – served ‘medium’ by request – served on a brioche bun with lettuce and tomato, topped with caramelised onion and melty grilled cheese. Mine was moist, meaty and tasty and accompanied by a well kept pint (or two) of well-kept ‘Landlord’.

Service was attentive, while not crowding, and we didn’t feel rushed.

I can see why it’s their favourite local, and the new owners have enhanced what was already a nice eatery.

We look forward to returning in the future.
