(The Eagles – yes I know I’ve used the title before)
Manchester is blessed with perhaps more burger joints than is healthy, ranging from the Hard Rock Café to more artful burger joints like Solita and Almost Famous – who now have several venues in the city centre.
Well boys, move over, there’s a new kid in town, Byron, and they’re good, they’re very good.
No, they’re better than very good. They’re great.
I stumbled across Byron on Deansgate almost by chance, I’d seen the hoardings and knew they were coming.
And I was pleasantly surprised to realise that they were open. A ‘soft opening’ a couple of nights before the official opening. I’ve eaten at Byron in Bluewater, Kent and was greatly impressed.
The decor is modern industrial chic, but bright and cheerful, not industrial grey, this in itself is refreshing.
The servers were friendly and attentive.
The menu is minimal, a few starters, half a dozen burgers – all 6oz and all cooked medium – and a few sides, but they all sound delicious. I opted for the ‘Byron’ which comes with dry-cure bacon, mature cheddar, lettuce, tomato, red onion and ‘Byron sauce’.
Oh, and I ordered a side dish of Onion Rings.
While I was waiting, the server brought me a complimentary portion of tortilla chips served with tomato salsa and guacamole.
The tomato salsa was fresh, comprising tomato, red onion and coriander, all finely chopped with slivers of red chilli. The guacamole was fresh and chunky, not artfully hand crushed at your table, but delicious.
The main course, as you would expect for their namesake burger was wonderful, served slightly pink and juicy with meaty rashers of crispy bacon and tasty melted cheddar cheese.
The onion rings were real onion (not reconstituted as so often elsewhere) and cooked in a batter so light that it verges on tempura.
There’s a healthy selection of condiments on each table.
The milkshakes looked pretty good too.
All in all, Byron promises to shake up the Manchester Burger scene, okay so their location isn’t the coolest, but the warm welcome and excellent burgers mean that I will be back, often.
I said their burgers were great, they’re better than that, they’re probably the best restaurant burgers I’ve eaten.
